PRE_WWGC briefing in Issoudun.

It is mid summer and we “enjoy” 16dgr. yes at least PLUS, but this is no weather for summer. Looking at the OLC July shows not a lot of flights, while it should be “booming”. Topper till today is 942 flights on the 7th. BUT…it seems to improve!Let’s hope I count the days to the 28th when I depart very early at 5 AM for my flight at 7  to London to fly from there via Dallas to Uvalde.

The Pre-WWGC continued…..more or less.  So I continue as well .
On Wednesday another 1.30 AAT. Best distance was 146 km. in an ASG29, but handicapped the day-winner was Celine Gantie in Pegase with 388 points. Natasja , in her LS 6, did well with a 12th place and 117.7 km in 1.27.[303 points]

Natasja and Nathalie Hurlin before start.

In 18 m. same marginal conditions but still a window to fly in and the same task .Day-winner here had 160 km in 1.27, flying an ASG 29/18m.
Thursday; the message I received was….rigging….waiting…open class cancelled…waiting…standard class cancelled…waiting…new task for 18 m and the “women” …resetting tasks in logger etc…waiting…cancelled…de-rigging…and waiting for the forecasted “load” of new rain. Instead of news some more pictures……

WAITING.
pictures courtesy Hans Spekkers

While waiting for good weather it is interesting to meet pilots who have been “SOMEBODY” in our sport. So did Natasja. She met Gill Van den Broeck, who is together with Georgette Litt THE lady in aviation from Belgium in the past and still well known now. Gill, born in 1927, is one of the most influential women in European and international soaring and flew lots of records and was involved in many female contests on World and/or European level as TC, director, jury member and president of the jury in Klix [2005] , steward and chief steward.Here she is with Natasja.

 Women in soaring, young and a bit older.

Friday another miserable day and NO flying!

Saturday last day;

Weather on the last day; Pictures says enough.

Briefing at 10.30 but….the weather was still not “” flash” . The last day of the 37th International was cancelled in both classes and pilots had “only” 5 days in standard class and 6 in the mixed- open out of 12!!!
Still hoping for a window, for the 2 other classes, so a 1.30 hour AAT for the women and a 2 hour AAT for the 18 m. class pilots was set.
But…in vain….. The weather refused to co-operate. So next year they start again and then in real. With this typical British weather the girls from the UK , MAYBE had a bit of an advantage if you may call it and advantage ….anyhow Elisabeth Sparrow won  the Pre-WWGC with 1371 points before runner up from France Marilyne Abadie-Berard.[1334 points]Marylyne is the new French female champion.
Natasja was on a good 21st spot.
In 18 m. class the winners prize was for Christophe Couseau with 1417 points while Denis Guerin was runner up with only 3 points less!!!!!!!
Let’s hope for MUCH better weather next year as now they had more cancelled days then flying days. A pity for organizers and even more for the pilots who were surely hoping for the real French weather.

Got, while having contact with Beryl Hartley from Narromine , some news about this wonderful soaring place and I share a BIT WITH YOU :
—” All is well here at Narromine. My son Mark who  is the CEO of the Sport Aircraft Assoc. of Australia has the head office of that group in our old building and with his staff is building up an increase in sport aircraft at Narromine. The gliding club now has two Duos and 3 single seater and is still going strong although not as many members as we would wish. Arnie and I still do a lot of work with the club and probably will do until we are too old to be useful.–”
And I can confirm that both are VERY HARD workers and lovely people to deal with.

Talking about Australia good news from Tocumwal as well as Eddie bought for Sportaviation a new light aircraft for the new season;
—” Jake and Eddie flew over to Horsham to pick up the newest addition to our fleet. A new Eurofox nose wheel Glider Tug 24-7571. This will complement the Eurofox taildragger tug now in use for training and Glider towing.–”
For all those who are not on FB, here is the picture;

Unfortunately the weather in Räyskälä was as terrible as here . Till yesterday  they had NO flying day during their Nationals in standard class, 15 m and 2 seater class!!!!
Finally Silva could fly again after having been competition director for several comps including the ones I visited , the EGC and JWGC  . He was supposed to fly with his son Johannes in the duo discus, but only Saturday they could fly;249 km. tasks were  handed over to the eager pilots in each class!
And….they flew!!!! Juha Sorri was the best in standard class 86 km./h. in Discus 2B.
Harrie Hirvola was the best in 15 m. with 86.8 km./h. in Ventus 2 A.
And in the 2-seater class Tihula Kimmo won in the duo discus.[82.3 km./h.]
Unfortunately Silva and Johannes had to make an outlanding after 207 km.
ONLY ONE DAY TO GO, today! No tasks yet.

3 More blogs and off I am. Cheers Ritz

PRE-WWGC..18m. French Nationals..ELY!

 Alphen aan den Rijn     Wednesday July 11 2012

ritzdeluy@hotmail.com     www.glidinginternational.com     www.soaringcafe.com

 Lots of rain here over the last days, really “bucketing from the skies”! The one-day-competition, Amstelglide Grand Prix , was so lucky with their good weather on Saturday, as on Sunday it was raining cat’s and dogs here!!! It must have been great fun as well, as all beer was “gone” after the party. In the end 41 gliders were up in the air, with 12 outlandings or “used engines”.I had an invitation to visit but was otherwise occupied!
The same luck had Silverstone; Saturday horrible rain, Sunday sunny conditions with a great winner Mark Webber and Vettel on 3,  not bad for Red Bull.
By the way did you enjoy all sport that Sunday afternoon as well ??? What great , magic tennis between Federer and Murray and the youngest participant of the Tour de France, 22 years old , won the day.

2 Impressions from Issoudun by Hans Spekkers , crew from Natasja van der Neut.

The WWGC day 2 got a B task on Sunday; instead of the first set 208 km.,  the girls had to find it out by their selves in  a 1.30 h. AAT. There was about 25 kts wind and the pretty heavy rain had been active all night; so a wet airfield and wet paddocks, for that reason the tough wind was good , not so much however for the 110 gliders ready to be launched by 13 tugs at 2 PM.
Yes 110 as now along the 37th International and the Libelle Cup, the women and 18 m. pilots joined in as well.
From the 37 women, 11 did not finish. Best distance was 149.2 km. in 1.33.50 and French pilot Marylene Abadie-Berard got the 384 points as daily winner. Nathalie Hurlin was runner up. A good pilot,  as I saw myself at JWGC’s. Natasja ended up on a good  22d place after her outlanding the day before.

Natasja before and after a flight. courtesy Hans Spekkers.

In 18 m. French pilot Denis Guerin was the best in their 2 hour AAT with 198.2 km. in 1.56.19. He “received” 550 points. From 34 pilots 10 did not finish amongst them toppers as Gilles Navas , Jeremie Badaroux and Peter Eriksen.
By the way, Denis will fly in club class in the Chaves WGC [Argentinia]  in the beginning of January together with Louis Bouderlique who flies in 18 m. this week as well.
The Libelles and rest of the class did NOT start and the open class was won by Antoon Kerkhofs with 147.8 km. in the Duo Discus in time 1.42.11.[AAT time was 1.30]

On Monday new chances for all pilots in France/Issoudun. But still not the TOP weather! Small tasks as 2.00 AAT for the women and 1.30 for the 18 m. pilots.
Pre WWGC; Best distance that day was 193.5 km. in 2.05 by Anne Ducarouge.[582 points] Natasja was on spot 23 [355 points]
18 m.: he outlanded on Sunday after 61 km. but took revenge on Monday; Peter Eriksen from Denmark won the day with 181.2 km. in 1.48. Gilles , who “went au vache ” on Sunday as well, was 7th .
37th edition;2 hour AAT for the small gliders and I was very pleased to read that Brian Spreckley won in the Libelle [475 points].  In the mixed open class the Issoudun ASH 25 pilots won the 1.30 AAT with 154.2 km. in 1.33.

On Tuesday , after 4 hours of waiting, the day was cancelled. They are not lucky with the weather.

BUT>>>>>WOW , ELY is “Hot”, what great flights and specially from Ramy [Yanetz] , which 2 super flights in a row. After the 1.126 km. flight on Saturday he added on Sunday an FAI triangle from 1000 km. and on top of that he flew some kilometers for the OLC;  a total of 1.228 and that in the ASW 27, good on him. A bit of a difficult beginning of the day , he claims, but strong thermals later gave “epic conditions” [Buzz] to fly big distances. Nice to read the enthusiasm from Buzz Graves flying in the DG 800S/18m.  his first 1000 km. Congratulations!!!
And….what about Uwe Kleintempel; On Monday he flew a 1.131.km FAI triangle his third-in-a-row 1000 and added on the “awesome day”  some more kilometers topping the OLC list with 1.356 km!!!! In a Ventus 2CM/18m. More wows!!!!
And…Ramy was still not tired, he started later that day but still flew 1000 km for the OLC, with a 760 Out and Return and a 489 FAI triangle!!!

Also good weather in Spain in Fuentemilanos  kilometer-eaters Hans [Germany] and Pepe [Spain] and Alfredo [Italy] flew over 700 km in their ASH 31/21m.  and Uwe from Villacastin in the DG 808 C/18m. flew 680 k.
Former junior champion Christophe Nacke flew the LS 1d to a nice flight over 500 km. in Germany. So while it was pretty miserable and unstable here in this part of Europe, other places had good soarable conditions. Some places in the South , as Italy and East as Bulgary suffer from heat-waves up to over 40dgr. while the Mid of Sweden suffers from flooding due to heavy rainfall.
In the USA still lot’s of problems due to the heat as well. The first 6 months of 2012  seem to have been hotter there then ever before.

The  Schmelzer family  added some new high- lights to their Moroccan holiday, loving every minute of their stay, taking the less good weather days for granted. The exclusive interview with Tijl is to be read in soaringcafe main page left today. Some flights I hear,  were pretty exhausting. The weather with  lot’s of showers,  was sometimes pretty difficult, but no worries they set records and flew long distances and discovered a new airfield.
Another high- light of their holiday on July 4 written by Bert jr. on FB:
—“‎1211 km !
Today Tijl and I declared a 1161km declared task, which we had to abandon after a struggle to find good climbs along the Sahara desert.Instead we modified our task, and tried and succeeded in completing a 1211 km free 3TP-distance task and achieved a new African Continental and Belgian record (still to be approved off course).
Needless to say, WE LIKE MAROC !—“

On their last day yesterday they finished with a 300 km. out and return record with a speed of 173.5 km./h. and another 1000 km. flight by Bert jr. and sr., as…dad wanted to “optimax”  to a 1000 km day again !!!! Good old Bert sr.
We know so much more now about a for most of us pretty unknown area to fly in. I am grateful the family shared their experiences with us. They certainly are great PR for our great sport. Thanks to all of them!!!!!

What a happy family!!! What great results ..And so deserved!

Day 2 at Issoudun was cancelled and looking at the European weather fore-cast I was n’ t amazed . Day 3…same verdict…
Natasja , one of the Dutch soaring- girls, was flying the 37th Competition till now ,  preparing in her own way to get hopefully, a ticket for the WWGC next year. She was a bit unlucky, as she came low “without prospect” as she said herself, before the first TP , ready to land, wheel out , water taps open and a reasonable field [it seems that the harvest is also late in France , meaning not a lot of good paddocks to land in!!!] BUT dug herself out with the help of  “some sweet buzzards” , lost however 340 points on that day 1 , BUT she finished showing caracter!!!  Who reads Dutch can follow her on her blog;  http://www.natasjavanderneut.blogspot.nl/

On Friday I heard she had made the decision to move from the 37th International edition of Issoudun to participate in the Pre Worlds. She got the invitation and was more then happy and proud. I wondered already why she did not go for that in the first time, as her dream and goal is; flying a WWGC and she can do it. Not a winner yet, but gaining experience is so important.
SO…..GOOD ON HER !!! Will follow the girls and the 18 m. pilots as well.
Also on Friday;  a small window with a 1.30 AAT in both classes. Only 2 pilots in open class finished this AAT in 2.37 and 2. 56 and 152 and 147 km. Tough day, but good on the finishers!

day 2 and 3 were cancelled. picture courtesy Natasja.

 In Spain at Ocana the Spanish Nationals  in 4 classes are finished now. 43 Pilots  participated, to be honest I only know 1 of them. They flew 7 days,  so a good competition with just under and over 200 km. tasks in club class, between 250 and 350 in standard class, under and above 300km in 15 m. class with 382 on Wednesday and in open class 416 was the longest task.

 Pilots flying in Uvalde surely have seen on the WGC site already, that on July 1 and 4 new updates have been placed about airspace and control point and log file documents . When you are interested you can have a look as well.
http://wgc2012uvalde.com/
The official control point shows pictures from ALL TP’s. Only 19 days to go!!! Here is the Belgian open class team with Pierre de Broqueville, Arnaud de Brockeville and Patrick Stoufs who flies “EB 28 -edition Uvalde “with a 25 m. wing span!!! As said before Patrick flew in 1991 as well in Uvalde!

Promised you some more news about the “New” Gariep- Dam- Aviation -status.
The new owners finally after 10 years have become OWNERS of the airfield. They are upgrading the facilities and operations will be in their hands. They announce transparent prices, hospitality and comfort for all.
You can read, about the new operations, the new prices , the new upgraded infra structure  and more  on ; http://www.gariepdamaviation.com/images/flyers/flyer_en_2012.pdf

Several competitions started yesterday ;Rayskala with the Nationals in standard, 20 m and 15 m. and the PRE- WWGC and the French 18m. Nationals.
SORRY, in my last blog I quickly added Hyvinkää as the place to be for the 2 seater class [20 m.] but looking later at the FAI site to check it,  I found out it was Räyskälä and they started yesterday, but looking at their site… no task,  so I presume the weather did not allow for day 1 .Though I was a few times in Finland my Finnish is NON existing!
The Pre WWGC  and 18 m French Nationals had pretty miserable weather. Task length for the women; 178 km.
12 from the 38 girls finished!!! German Sabrina Vogt from Germany and UK pilot Elisabeth Sparrow were the best gaining 311 and 310 points for the day.
Best French girl, as it is also the French Nationals for women was Celine Gantie in Pegase.
The 18 m. pilots got a task from 209.6 km. and NOBODY finished! Best distance was 115 km. followed by 76.3.Still a week to go!!!
Task for today in 18 m. class; 224 km. The women got 208.5 km. on ” their plate.”

Also a one-day-competition yesterday in Holland called Amstelglide with a real Regatta start! On Friday organizers were still worried about the weather and asked for alternatives if the day would not be good enough. No worries,  it turned out to be a nice , no a very nice day.[see picture and…a 523 km. flight was even flown in Holland]  About 58 pilots in 4 classes were launched from Soesterberg the “home” from the Amsterdam Soaring Club. The preliminary results in 20 m. say that Steven Huiskes, who flew together with his dad in the Duo Discus XLT,  won with 2.42.49 over 253 km., which means Steven is “good” and ready for Uvalde as youngest participant from the Dutch team. He finished just before Wim Akkermans [ partner from Sofie making the picture below] who flew the ARCUS with 2.42.52. What about that!!!!!????
Another young talented pilot is Jeroen Jennen from Belgium . He flew the 258 km. with a speed of 89.2 km. /ph. winning in the st/15 m. class.

Picture from Jeroen Jennen and the LS 8, via FB ; courtesy  Sofie Huybreckx

By the way ELY had fantastic weather yesterday and with a declared 3 TP 1000 km. in an ASW 27 , Ramy Yanetz topped the OLC list.

Last but not least; One of the few hang glider pilots I  personally met  is Jonny Durand.[Australia]  Now I saw that on July 3 he flew together with an American mate , Dustin Martin, a new word record in TEXAS,[ the Zapata -area] : 760 km. in 11 hours-plus. The old record was just over 700 km. and set in 2011 by an Austrian pilot. Amazing to “hang” for so many hours!!! Everybody who wished, could follow the attempt on a tracking system. The dream was to fly 800 km. but that will happen one day as well.
The loggers are going to say within days, who in fact has the real new World record. It’s still NOT confirmed now but it seems Jonny said that Dustin passed over him and landed a few km. further. We will patiently wait.

Enough updates, too much happening, so CU on Wednesday, cheers Ritz

Quarzazate….Space , Issoudun….and …back on line!

Back on line after 4 days of more or less desperate trying to find out what was wrong. I “lost ” the “visual”  toolbar, but Bill in the USA “found it back” . What about that for skills and co-operation between Holland [soaring.eu] and the USA. [soaringcafe.com]
With the help of SKYPE, or not as it failed all the time , a mobile phone and chat’s , it is sorted out. Bill knows SO much more about WordPress then I do , but then …I am just a blogger and like to write…. not to know too much about the background of the system.
Looking forward to meet Bill and Rand. We “stepped'”  in our adventure/co-operation a while ago, only knowing we love to share soaringnews.
A bit ashamed I have to mention now too, that I never put a connection between the “Soaring- cafe Bill” and the Bill who won TWICE the 18 m. Nationals in the USA. So in a few weeks I will meet the editor/top pilot in Uvalde where he FLIES in 18m. class and writes about his flights and I do the rest.

What a great moment for all viewers when the  Soyuz capsule arrived safely at earth at 10.15 AM on Sunday. How fantastic that I could see in Alphen live-pictures from Kazachstan , even the capsule hanging on the 1 square km. parachute. Unbelievable !
What heroes those astronauts are and how “terrible “they look after arrival. Unbelievable that we can send people around the earth but have difficulties to get them out of a capsule. It went “like an oiled machine” they said, but it did n’t look too good to me. Lifting them under their arms….
Anyhow they are all sound an safe and Andre , to be honest looked best from the 3 . Felt really sorry for the American who seems to have fainted after pulling 9G and ” falling” still pretty hard on earth. Will be interesting to see how these astronauts will be in 25 years, if this trip has had any influence on them.
For now Andre mentioned he has to learn walking again after half a year without gravity.He also feels miserable and unsteady.But he should be perfect again on the 20thiest when he arrives back home in Holland. End of August he will be honoured by all Dutch people. The way he shared all news , gave us an inside look in the “rooms” of the space station and his many jobs, makes him a ” mate” for all Dutchies.

AND YES,….on the first of July they, the brothers Schmelzer flew their first 1000 km flight from Quarzazate. The weather had improved and both brothers Tijl in the back, had a very rewarding day with a difficult beginning.
Yesterday Bert jr. and sr. were up in the air for another 1000 km flight,  while Tijl took time to write to me and other friends. You can read that in my blog on www.soaringcafe.com A new series of pictures by Bert jr is here;
https://picasaweb.google.com/101367179377196465151/010720121100Km

Mum Hilde keeping the long wing, ridge flying and amazing landscape.

The day before on the last day of June, Bill Hill flew in his Discus 2 a 1000 as well from Moriarty with “truly awesome soaring weather”. Speed….163.90 km./h. What do you want more!? More 1000 km. flights??? Possible as they were also flown from Ely.Best picture I have from Ely I received from Daan Pare a few years ago; REAL RAIN!!!

Uvalde is going to live more now. On FB I heard from Kiki, [Jackie Clerbaux] that he will be there as well as coach of the Italian team. Also Terry Cubley from Australia, will be there, it looks like ONE BIG reunion! I wonder how many people would put their hands up when asked if they were there in 1991.
Got some dinner invitations already now, one from a Dutch soaring-friend  [we go 40 years back] living in Canada for years and I have not seen him for those 40 or more years.
Goal from soaring comps; make and keep friendships all over the world. For me this worked more then GOOD!!!!!!!
The South African team is nearly ready to go and on FB I found their itinerary, and…as a lot are not linked to FB , here it is;
—“Since the Worlds are just around the corner, I thought we should give you an idea when our pilots and crews will be leaving SA and heading to the States. The travel plans look more or less like this: AP will be the first to head off on the 12th of July, followed closely by Attie and Uys on the 16th. Then it will be Bossie and Ronald heading off on the 19th and Mark and Gunter are leaving a day later on the 20th. Laurens is leaving SA on the 23rd and Oscar, Carol and Richard on the 24th. So that leaves Stephan who will be on his way on the 27th. Eventually we will all meet up in Uvalde!—“

Issoudun in France is very busy this beginning of July  with several comps in one go!
There is the French Women Nationals, with 20 participants and with 17 international invited guests. Busy ,busy….. but next year the 7th WWGC will be held in Issoudun, from June 29-July 2013, so practice is important , so you can call  this  a PRE WWGC.[July 7-14]
The 18 m. Nationals ,with 28 French pilots and  also with a max of 8  invited guests and still 2 on a waiting list.
Further on the  yearly International competition  this time the 37th edition ,[July 3 till 14], will be held and the 6th Coupe Libelle.
 Even guests as Brian Spreckley [Libelle] , Dick Bradley, [South Africa]  Chief steward in Uvalde  and daughter Jennifer [ sharing a Pegase] , as well as Natasja van der Neut the comps director from the Dutch Nationals are in France to enjoy some good soaring from a well known place with great conditions and infra- structure!
Issoudun is like Bailleau very popular by Dutch pilots who like to fly comps and the practise days had good weather with 500 km. flights!

 Natasja, ready to go for it, with crew Hans[meteo at all Dutch Nationals I was involved in ] and Ronald [ involved in the same comps]

As said the 37th edition of Issoudun started yesterday. In standard class former WGC champion in Benalla, Brian Spreckley won the day over 198 km. Dick {Richard} and Jennifer Bradley, sharing the Pegase were 6th.
In open class the long time experience from Dutch pilots was clear . 2 Dutchies on spot 1 [Ronald Kaay] and 2 [Antoon Poortman] both  flying a duo discus XL. Natasja was 10th.

For ALL the news from the first flight FULL of water from the CONCORDIA, 800 kg. and still not yet the max starting weight, you best read the news in soaring cafe from Bill, who was there that day!

That’s it for today. In soaringcafe on sunday the latest private news from Tijl about Quarzazate. Scores from Issoudun and tasks on www.soaringspot.com.
You are up to date, cheers Ritz

Pure gliders arrived as well!More news from Quarzazate!

Alphen aan den Rijn     Sunday july 1 2012

ritzdeluy@hotmail.com     www.glidinginternational.com     www.soaringcafe.com

July started today and in 28 days I will be in Uvalde. June by the way was , weatherwise a pretty miserable month in Holland. Also on the OLC not ONE day showed  over 2000 flights , while in May we could see a few. Only 4 days with over 1000 flights meaning world wide the weather was less good for soaring then in May.

It seems according to  weather-online that we had here in Holland, 167 sun hours instead of the average 194 and more rain 100 ml. instead of the average 68.

Time to move soon to hot Texas!

Uvalde line up in 2011! picture from their site!

The last report from the EUROGLIDE organizers on Thursday was: —“19:45 – Resume: M1, JB and ZZ finished by car with enough credits (they think)

>19:30 – The iNO called, they are at Terlet. They finished Malden at about
16:46L

<p>18:25 – ZZ landed at Grefrath 14.14Z. Will he be the first in the Gliders-class? He has enough credits. Depends on JB and M1, they landed out about 30km from Malden.em>

This means that the first PURE gliders have arrived after 2350 km. as well. Good on them!

In Pocuinai in Lithuania the 15 m. class Nationals are flown between June 23 and today. I was impressed a couple of years ago with Vitautas Racimavisius, who flew as junior in Räyskälä and was TC as well. Now he flies the Nationals and compares his soaring with that of 28 other pilots and is doing well, even winning day 3 in the LAK 19 , a small 1 hour 30 AAT!He flew in 1.42 a distance of 113 km. and gained 153 points.

Day 1 had 169 km. and day 2 268 km. After that, 3 days of “rest” and on Friday soaring again with a good day for “a ” Vitautas but not “mine”; he landed after 343 km. while the winner flew 349 km., exactly the task they got . Makes me think Vitautas was fast but had a problem in the last moment or a too marginal final glide, costing him 559 points that day??

In Italy 8 teams of 2-seaters are ready to start the Nationals from Voghera. Alongside 22 pilots fly to win the Cup of Oltrepo.

Quaurzazate; no soaring picture today but as you can see the solar planes have the full attention from the Schmelzer family.Today a picture from a special solar plane , called Khartan see above, , [according to Tijl,] performing in movies as Kingdom of Heaven and Hildalgo. Most “impressive” is Bert sr. “keeping the camel under control”.

80 Years old; The gliding club at Terlet, called the GeZC,the Gelderse Soaring Club, celebrated their anniversary yesterday with 2 seater flights for young and old guests, aerobatic demonstrations by the FOX team and a hot air-balloon. And… a BBQ with lot’s of beer to finish this remarkable birthay

Only next month the club from Venlo will be 80 years old too and flying 75 years from the airfield of Venlo. Time to celebrate long-time-soaring in Holland. They invited everybody to fly or drive in for a good night out with a concert of the Orchester from the Royal Airforce, on July 14.

To finish just the message that my Aussie friends in the East of Australia enjoy great winter weather with flights up to 400 km. And…that I have severe problems with my blog as it does n’t want to go in “visual-mood”, it stays in HTML and you can’t work well then, all sentences bounce up and down and pictures will not go to the place I want them to be. Sorry,but ….the good news is that I have friends sorting it out. More news today in my soaringcafeblog at www.soaringcafe.com

Euroglide …12 are back!Quintus!Quarzazate!

ritzdeluy@hotmail.com     www.glidinginternational.com     www.soaringcafe.com

Only 3 days in Husbos during the 18 m. UK Nationals, but at least 2 days more then at Lasham with the open class Nationals. Winner in 18 m. Derren Francis before former WGC participant , Russell Cheetham and winner in 1993 in Borlange Andy Davis .

It is not often that I notice OLC flights from Hungary and they have such good pilots. Good to see a few good ones last Sunday; 605 in a Glasflügel 304 and 396 in an LS 6. A pity  no pilots from Hungary fly for the 32-d WGC in Uvalde. Not even György Gulyas who won the 15m. class in Lüsse in 2008. Did not see them on the Pre-entry-Chavez list either, but that has still time!

Euroglide; Organizers report on Sunday said;
—” – Today was another difficult day, stong wind and difficult thermals and the teams where bouncing against the front.
The QV has flown wave up to 3000 meters and 50km/h of headwind at the Ertzgebirge!—“

As you see all kind of different weather situations on this over 2000 km. race and compared to last time , more difficult , as pilots were already back home then. After 7 days in 2010 84 % , 49 from 56 teams,  were back home.
Of course you noticed that the organizers due to the bad weather forecast decided to fly the race the other way around. NOT to the SE first , but to the NE via Germany and Poland to the Czech Rep. and back via Germany to Malden. Just to inform you when you have a look at the map and the positions via tracking.
Combined with this RACE is a sponsor programm and I really like that as well;
—“The Euroglide Sponsor Challenge is a charity fundraising initiative. Several teams have found sponsors and are raising funds for Aviation Sans Frontières. Detailed information can be found on the website euroglidesponsors.nl—“

Pictures via FB from Jeppe waiting for glider DIX to arrive at Burg Feuerstein where quite a few of my friends fly and a picture from Rens; trailers on the Czech Rep. Road.

Real Euroglide pictures via FB by Jeroen Beeke.

On Monday glider UFO the Nimbus 4DM was 500 km out!!! Glider QV , a Duo Discus T  is flying but….the trailer had a problem at Zwickau Airport, as you can see on the picture from Frouwke via FB. That is also part of EUROGLIDE! Luckily it did n’t cost too much time as the message was there with ” We are on our way again!”

On day 9yesterday the weather was OK for the pilots up front a bit of a tough wind for those still in Czech Rep. Expectation was that 2 gliders would reach the final destination at Malden.
Organizers morning Tuesday-report ; –“The LT and LL have to fly about 280km to Malden, that’s possible. Maybe more teams reach Malden today!–”
And indeed with the great weather from yesterday it was NO problem. Team LL arrived first in the self launcher class and LT in the turbo class. They had in their team the first 1000 km pilot flying   from Holland [ Venlo ] and back this year.
From the pure gliders nobody has arrived yet. A total of 6 in selflaunchers and 6 in turbo glider-pilots is back at Malden. Amongst them also Daan Pare and glider QV with the trailer problem and Bart flying SH.
For pictures from both winning  teams please go to www.zweefportaal.nl

Bart [to the r.] happy to be at Malden with the best!

While waiting for better weather Tijl is very informative about the Solar Impulse. Great that just he meets these people in Quarzazate, being an engineer .Here is what he had to say about the hangars for the plane:
—“In Madrid Barajas they have access to an existing (massive) hangar, in Toulouse (for a potential stopover in July) they have also arranged one. The logistics are insane. For the circumnavigation of the globe it will be even much more challenging.
The team now here is over 50 people. They will have to wait for a couple of days until the weather calms down. They operate in a very thin margin.—“

The airport from Quarzazate.

The rest of the family is there as well, what about such a soaring-family-holiday, so they hopefully share more stories and pictures with us. Bert jr. straight away started. Look at these pictures and  for all pictures at;

Great view over the desert area.

The latest pictures are SUPER as well; under “chasing convergences and dodging rain showers” you can find them at ;

The Quintus  indeed has in time the water ballast- system built in ,for the Uvalde WGC .On the Schempp Hirth site I read that they started with the prototypes on June 15. It seems reliable with NO problems. Good. Look at this great picture I found on FB by Chris Kiehn from Australia. Love the text as well;

A WOW picture!Quintus finish with Tilo driving…

My Aussie mates   are preparing for their trip to Uvalde. David Jansen has arrived already in Texas;
—“Southfork Ranch TX. As the new series of “Dallas” begins here in Texas, 4D finally gets a customs clearance in LA after some “special” attention. The glider will be collected from the importer today and I will begin the 3 day drive from LA to Uvalde on the 24th or 25th with the anticipation of beginning practice around the 29thJune. The weather indicates temperatures in the high 30’s to low 40’s a month out from the contest… “—”
Gosh do not have to take pullovers or coats though …..I remember having been cold in air-conditioned  areas!

 Cu on Sunday, by the way “WE” were BAD during the European Championship of soccer, but there is hope “We” that is the students of the University of Eindhoven won the WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP robot soccer in Mexico. cheers Ritz

When I heard last week from  Tijl that he was going to Quarzazate I asked him to write a bit more about flying there as we do not know too much about this place and the conditions.Here is his first story;
—” First day in Ouarzazate, Morocco. Never thought I would say this, but the thermals are too strong. Good weather combined with strong wind from the Sahara means sandstorms. We did a short checkflight today. Couldn’t see the fantastic cumulus clouds on top (at ca 3000+m?) until 750m ground. And from 1500m the ground bellow started to disappear. We did the wise thing: stay VMC, and flew a bit around …the airfield. Visibility got even worse after landing. Small world indeed). Great guys. They showed us around the plane, and helped us out with a small repair on the glider.

The Solarimpulse team is here as well (here for promotion of the MASEN 500MW CSP solar power plant). The team consists of mostly Swiss guys (of which I already met one before.

The plane it self is impressive. The logistics are equally impressive. I ll let the pics do the words for that.—”
Thanks Tijl!

Tijl ready for his checkflight with Bernd Dolba in the ASH 25EB28.
AND

Sand storm.Visibility less then 2 km.

And the SOLAR PLANE ready for promotion inside the hangar.

I wrote you already more about the solar plane Impulse.And that it arrived in Morocco. Great to see this picture from Tijl now.

On the longest day  I had to put the lights on at 8 PM. Dark skies with thunderstorms just passed by for over an hour. Luckily not too bad here! Much worse in Austria and parts of Germany.
The Scandinavian Midsummernight is over now as well. Always great fun!
It all means that we are still in summer BUT with the days getting shorter , autumn and winter or …..the other way around down under, are there before we know. Time is going TOO fast!

EURO GLIDE  continues and as you can see it is not only soaring but also sharing friendship and good food! Gliders arrived so did the cars and trailers as you can see on the picture from Frans Wijsman who “found ” the webcam from Rotenburg! Good!
Pictures say more then words!!!!!

and a picture from Jeroen Beeke ; Rens “cooking”the meat.

Thursday and Friday were rather good so some pilots made a lot of progress. 2 Teams have for different reasons left the race. Here is what I read on the Friday-organizers-report;
—“21:45 – Today was a great flyable day, the teams made a lot of progression. The UFO and MD are up front, just about 155KM before the second turning point. On the airfield Gorlizt it is about to become a nice evening, at this moment there are 11 teams located over there! Have a nice evening and keep in mind, tomorrow will be another beautiful day.—”
MD is Max [Dolfin] a great mate, who spends his winters in Corowa [Australia] and knows all about long-distance-flying and UFO is Max a very nice guy and collegue of my daughter.
Yesterdays report says;
—“Leading in sequence now: 1.UFO and 2.LT. MCT and QV are short behind them. —”

You can read all this news,  day by day  on www.euroglide.nl   and look at where the gliders live are  at Glidertracking.com.

Day 3 of the UK 18 m. Nationals  was a difficult one . None of the pilots finished but some were close. The task length was 345 km and Mike Young managed to fly 335 km. [469 points] while Derren Francis was just 1 km. behind.[467 points] Derren in the Ventus is still on top, followed by the JS 1 gliders and 2 ASG 29’s. No flying on Thursday and Friday due to miserable weather and temperatures.
BUT…….yesterday a small task again with 155 km…..and it was scrubbed, weather was NOT good enough. A pity.

 Talking about bad weather in the UK, here is news from Graham [ Garnett ] I “found” on FB.
—“Just a quick note to let everyone know that Lasham will be holding a second Regionals competition alongside the Junior Nationals between the 18th-26th August.
So in an attempt to give people the fun they missed out on earlier in the month… and to try to give value for money, anyone entered in either the Open class the 15m class or either Regionals classes can enter this second competition for a cost of £50.

Anyone else that would like to join us and everyone is welcome will be charged the normal Regionals rate of £170.office@lasham.org.uk

The idea is to try to make up a bit for the rubbish weather we had at the beginning of June when most people only got one scoring day out of the nine possible.

If you fancy coming to Lasham in August to join us please contact the Lasham office to add your name to the list 01256 384900 or office@lasham.org.uk

The weather can’t be that bad again, can it…..
Graham Garnett

Nice to see that Norway  twice topped the OLC list last week. Flying the Nimbus 4 DM,  Erlend Sorbye flew from Elverum, [also a wave paradise,]  a nearly 700 [600 km. FAI triangle] and over 800 km. task.

On the site from the Perlan Project you can read the latest news- letter , so when you are interested you can go to     http://perlanproject.org/newsletters/

Some nice flights yesterday on the OLC. 1000 km-plus in the USA where John Seaborn flew with the Ventus 2 1.128 km. with a speed of 154 km/ph. from Boulder in wave and also in Germany some nice long flights , as well as in Switzerland, have a look at www.onlinecontest.org

Cu on Wednesday. cheers Ritz
Finishing with 2 more pictures from Bert flying back “home”.Thanks Bert!!!!!

Looking back and ahead.And…EUROGLIDE!

EUROGLIDE, second day , first flying day on tracking system.
Glidertracking.com

On Monday morning when the Euro glide pilots were ready to go,  a big line of thunder-storms heavy rain and wind moved from the SW to the NE from Holland. Also the weather in Germany was not too good. The afternoon was much better, but satellite pictures showed it was not good enough; too late to start, so it was a day of waiting for the pilots!
In the end the morning-thunderstorms were severe at some places, setting houses in fire and making a chaos on the main Dutch train-station Utrecht where lightning hit as well.
Euroglide is once in 2 years and a “feast”  for pilots who want to take their own decisions. Nothing is sure , one big adventure. They started now yesterday, start facilities were open at Eindhoven from 9 onwards and the last pilots left at 10.55.
The “best “pilot at this stage is about 82 km. from the first TP ; Bart Renckens, flying not as a team but alone in his Ventus 2 CM. GOOD on him!!!!!You can follow them daily on www.euroglide.nl with a map where they are and a bit of a story. Enjoy!
Also via  Glidertracking.com you can follow them in REAL time!

Team Bas Krebbers en Reitze van der Linden en team NV waiting for the first start.
pictures via FB.

And after arrival on the first flying day, it is good resting and eating and having fun. Ton Staassen member of my “old” club ZES arrived in Höpen, as I saw on FB.

 Today there seems to be no usable thermal activity in the N of Germany, so a restday or maybe a day for tactical decisions/displacements. Looking back at the 2010 EUROGLIDE, I remember that all records were broken. Pilots never had been back home so quickly!!! In 4 days the first glider was back!!!!!!!

Amazing those 1000 km flights from Belgium. Sunday was another day to feel happy about his 3d 1000 in ONE season, for Tijl Schmelzer. Did he fly the first 2 from Keiheuvel the first one an Out and Return and the 2 d  extra special as he started and landed at Keiheuvel, this time he flew the Nimbus 4DM from Hasselt [Kiewit] together with Ken Evens.
It seems Tijl’s “concept of cloud making” works as from Weelde also in Belgium Herman Peeraer flew a 1000 in a Ventus 2CT/18m.  using ” it”and I am pretty sure 3x a 1000 in ONE season from Belgium never happenbed before!!!!
So here is the concept again;  http://www.scribd.com/doc/97134912/Cloud-Making-Machines

Tijl and Ken a good pair!

I felt sorry , looking back, for the UK open class pilots. ONE day is not much. Pete Harvey won with 833 points , followed by Steve Jones and Kim Tipple. Pete and Steve will be in Uvalde for the 32 WGC. The weather there will be much better then it was in the UK, so there they can show
Peter Sheard a bit older then the first 3 was a good number 4.
On that one soarable day only 7 from 21 finished.

The Pre- European comps in Vinon, had good weather and 6 out of 6 days pilots were in the air. In 15 m. the 2 French pilots Christophe Ruche and Louis Bouderlique were the winners and showed they are ready for Uvalde! As is Sebastian Kawa who was 3d.
In 18 m. class 2 toppers were out [Giorgio and Wolfgang due to an incident and tiredness] but Killian Walbrou is a topper too. Winning the last day , he moved to spot 1 in general. Good on him. Good “old” Gilles Navas was the best on 4 days in the general scores but had a less good last day [ 583 points against 812 from the winner]
In open class Bosjan Pristavec topped the overall scores on day 5 and 6 , the final day with more then 400 points. Stephan Beck topped that list on 3 days in the ASW 22 BLE. He will not be in Uvalde as Holger Karow, Tassilo Bode and Michael Sommer will defend the German colours there.

Looking at comps in progress,  of course the 18m. Nationals in the UK  [  Husbos  to be correct Husbands Bosworth] are interesting to follow. That is ….when they can fly!!!!
32 Pilots are on the list, waiting for “nice” weather. Mike Young and Russell Cheetham are amongst them. After the Pre Europeans they will fly their Nationals and the WGC in Uvalde.

Russell, here with Ronald Termaat. Both will fly in Uvalde!

But on Monday they were UP in the air with a 277 km. task. Not an easy day for some looking at the results. Russell did well being 2d, [863 points] so did” good old ”  Andy Davis with a 6th place. Steve Jones on 8, Mike Young 17 [ 582] and Phil Jones 20.
Tuesday, yesterday; finally some great weather reached the UK as well and a task from 426.3 km. was handed to the pilots.
I only know Derren Francis [Ventus 2cx]  by name, but I will remember his name  now even better. He must be a good pilot, as he won 2 days in a row!
More good flights in the UK yesterday from Dunstable [804 km. in ASH 25 EB and the longest flight till now from Dunstable this season] and Lasham.

Preparations in full swing for the Uvalde WGC. As you know I am going to be the main blogger for the SOARINGCAFE !!! Looking so much forward to this nice job!
Apartment…tick, cellular phone with text and web and unlimited minutes in the USA…tick, bicycle…tick, if necessary car…tick, tickets to and from the USA …tick,shirts with soaringcafe on it…tick, pick up in San Antonio…tick. The boys from soaringcafe spoil me!!

That’s it for today , back on Sunday! Cheers Ritz

Great holiday back to “work”!

Alphen aan den Rijn     Sunday June 17 2012

ritzdeluy@hotmail.com      www.glidinginternational.com      www.soaringcafe.com

Back home again, and…pretty good weather!!! Holland was less good but the SW coast of Holland gave us all kind of weather and not too much rain. We even had one day with full sunshine. The area is called the Zeeuwse Riviera and they are correct.
The first evening with 8/9 Bft. wind was interesting, on top of the dunes you “just went with the wind” difficult even to stand up, on the beach you were sand blasted and close to the sea it was nice to walk.
Enough about that, as of course we “sniffed” culture as well.

The town of Middelburg. Look at the skies!!!

For sure you have followed all the latest gliding news. I did not so I have to do some research. Come back on that on Wednesday when there would be something very exciting.
While on holiday I saw that more parts of Holland where good that Thursday, with great flights up to 800 km and over 1000 km just over the Dutch border. Another very successful flight by Belgium pilot Tijl Schmelzer;Here is his comment:

—“Awesome. Success on the 3rd attempt. A declared 1014km with finish in Flanders.A flight made possible thanks to:

– The Cloudmaking Machines
– Well over 250 hours of flight preparation and planning
– W.Grosskinski as an inspiration
Topmeteo and Toptherm
– Jos Gielen, the tow pilot
– ATC of KB
– And, off course, my family

I wrote a report in December last year with the conceptual background of the flight. You can find it here:

http://www.scribd.com/doc/97134912/Cloud-Making-Machines

The Dutch gliders  are on their way,  for a hopefully safe trip to Houston, where they will be  hooked on and taken by the owners to Uvalde for the WGC. YES it is coming closer now, UVALDE!

ready to be “packed”.
Picture via FB from Jeroen Kroen.

Tomorrow the big Europe-race, EUROGLIDE starts. More then 150 people pilots, crew and organisers are involved in this mega race. Will keep you informed.

Did have some mail contact with Marina about Giorgio, who is back home now. My private mails I will not share but Marina also shared some news on FB  and for those who are not involved with this social site, I can share that news;

—-“Dear friends, sooner or later I wil find the time to reply individually, but you are really a lot. Giorgio is now standing with his corset which prevents twisting and bending of the trunk. By the end of next week we will be at home, where for the next two months he will need mine and Chiara’s help for everything. It may seem strange, but my first reaction, after I found that Giorgio was in one pi…ece and moved his legs, was a blind rage, furious. I cannot still believe that a  pilots with his experience, which has more than 6,000 flying hours in the mountains, who knows this area well, could make such a mistake. Giorgio is not the kind of person that hides himself behind useless excuses and he will write soon a report.
He was very tired when he arrived in France and rather than give up and go home, as did the
Austrian Wolfgang Janowich, has remained mostly out of habit.
And now we all need to work on this. We can carry on our gliders all the tools make available by the modern technology, but the real safety is in the head of the pilots. Thank you all for your support.—“
Something to think about!
CU on Wednesday,back to my guests now,
Cheers Ritz

Weird weather!A top-day , then rain again and so it goes on!

Alphen aan den Rijn      Wednesday June 6 2012.

I am not joking, but we had last Sunday the same temperature as with Christmas in mid winter. And Saturday was just gorgeous, for us on the ground and for those high up and flying 750’s and more!
1329 Flights were added on Saturday on the OLC, on Sunday only 222, that says it all !!
Weird weather! Feel sorry …AGAIN …for some of the comps having to deal with rain and a struggle to “make ” days. We were so lucky in Holland with the Nationals  and so was  Denmark with nearly the best you could get out of the max days.

A shock this morning when I read the “dry ” words on the Provence2012 site;
—” Our friend Giorgio Galetto (Italy) crashed on the south side of the Tête du Peyron noth-east from St Crepin airfield. Giorgio is well (just slightly injured) and has been transported to the Hopital of Briançon for a check-up. We wish him a quick recovery.”
AND this morning .
A little problem with lumbar vertebre has been found. Giorgio wil be operated in surgery tomorow at Briançon Hospital.”
Hope as EVERYBODY else that he may recover totally and if possible can fly in Uvalde. But …a total recovery  is the first priority!!!All the best for him Marina and Chiara!!!

 Giorgio during the GP last year!

The open Dutch Military comps started with rain last Monday and 10dgr.!!!!! So day 1 from 5 was cancelled.
But NOT day 2 , yesterday, with 3.30 AAT’s in 4 classes and flights up to 307 km. by Peter Millenaar in Discus 2.
No soaring today I guess it will rain there as bad as here.

The women in Ulm, struggled with rain as well and waited till 3 to start for small AAT’s on Monday. Then the day was cancelled at 3.15.
But…300 km. in st. class yesterday, winner Meike Müller in the LS 8.
In club the girls had to fly a race over 237.7 km. and Swaantje won the day. Good on her!
The 15 m. ladies had 335 km. and believe it or not Katrin Senne [ASG 29] won again!!!All 5 days they flew the daily prize was hers!!! Super! She tops ,of course, the totals but Annette Klossok [ASG 29] remains close; 3599 and 3526 points. It looks they fly together at least always start together.

The Bayreuth pilots prepared their gliders on Monday for short tasks, would the weather finally allow them to fly??? There was hope !!!! BUT….. at 3 .10 they had to cancel as well.
BUT , yesterday the words were there;”  Nun geht ‘s los!” We can start now!! After 5 scrubbed days they could fly!!!
So they did only 2 outlandings and in open Uli [ Schwenk]  won in the EB 29 with a speed of 112 km./h. over 325 km.
To have 3 days,  meaning they have a valid competition they might fly one more day extra, as the comps only have tomorrow and Friday to go as ……..today is CANCELLED.

The Uk pilots in 15 m. and open class  had a good Monday morning….the weather was brightening!!!!! AND…..after waiting and waiting the classes got the message …..SCRUBBED!Today they wait again……but another scrubbed day!

The European pilots flying Provenceglide 2012  had after 1 day of soaring also a cancelled day , but started the week fresh on Monday  with 302 k. in 15 m. class, 363 in 18m. and 403 in open class. Start times were open between 13.52 [15m] , 14.20 for 18 m., and  14.33 for open. Atleast SOMEBODY was flying with this miserable weather.
And….in 15 m. all but one flew the 302 km., best pilot was Louis Bouderlique!
In 18 m. Gilles Navas got the 985 points and in open Bruno Gantenbrink was the best. Yesterday the weather was less good then expected! Mike Young, who I met as young crew in Benalla in 1987 and who became friends with my kids , won the day in 18 m.
In open Bosjan Pristavec won the day and in 15 m. Jeremy Badaroux was the best.
VERY SAD to hear that on this day Giorgio had such bad luck.
On day 2 some pilots violated the airspace and were virtual out after 15 km. like Bruno Gantenbrink. In the end Bruno [ETA] won the day but lost 1000 points for the violation; 0 points. Peter Hartman [ASG 29] from Austria had an incorrect start point on day 1 ; 0 points.

Good to see that atleast my friends in Ocana are having fun,  as well as in Greecewhere Alexis flew 752 in his ASW22BLE from Kopaida. Not a lot of pilots put their flights on the OLC from Greece.
Spain is “waking up ” as TOP soaring country for long distance flights and I noticed not only good flights from Ocana but also from Beas de Segura and Fuentemilanos.

The Finnish 18 m. Nationals from Räyskälä  have 2 days now and yesterday was a bad day for the 2 Martti’s [Sucksdorff and Koivula] , good friends from Tocumwal and from when I was there. Both outlanded after 244 and 266 km.on a 1000 km. day, won by Timo Saarnimo in ASG 29 flying 275 km. over a 3 hour AAT  !!!

As said; rain then sunshine and super soaring conditions.Yesterday was the perfect day again, today it rains cat’s and dogs.
Yesterday pilots from Holland and Belgium flew big distances ;923 for Tijl Schmelzerwho tried a 1000 km triangle, flew 786 km. from it, missed out on 20 minutes- more-lift to reach the powerplants [always giving lift] to fix it and some daylight but still a great flight. The so maniest this season in the Ventus 2CT /18m. !
Wim Akkermans flew from the airfield of Woensdrecht in Holland a very nice 866 kmtask [677 triangle in Arcus M]
From Luxembourg  kilometer -eater  Guy Bechtold flew 879 km. in his brand-new Quintus M.
Each of them are very grateful to the many []international] controllers they have to deal with. Good co-operation!

From my Perth friend I got the next news which I share with you as well;
—“We had our safety day at work today and we all traipsed off to the Perth Convention Centre to hear Richard de Crespigny talk about his experience as the captain of the Qantas A380 that had the spectacular disc failure in 2010. It was an amazing talk – sufficiently technical to keep the engineers spell-bound, but also very human too – praising the team he had with him in the air (including the passengers). Such a combination of misfortune and good luck, and of course a great deal of skill and training which eventually led to a happy outcome. He even gave the passengers his mobile phone number so they could ring him if they were dissatisfied with the way Qantas handled their ongoing journeys etc (no-one has called him!).

There was too much in de Crespigny’s presentation to relay here, but he has a book coming out, and I have included the link below in case you are interested.
