A very pleasant week!

Alphen aan den Rijn              12-10-2008

Yes indeed, we had weatherwise a very pleasant week. Not so much a nice week at work as , having an opening in the gallery means , working for 12 hours atleast, a day!!!!And that for 4 days.
It seems autumn has chanced its mind and has gone back to give a bit of summer weather here in Europe another chance.
Which means that even in Holland a 300 km triangle [in a Nimbus 4D,] cross country was possible.Unterwoessen had over 300 km [ ASW 20] and Dunstable [ the London Gliding Club –ASW 27] also.
Today we even seem to reach up to 22 dgr.!!!!Though at this stage it is still foggy.

Very pleased to see that Sportaviation has some pilots flying already and even more pleased to see that Bendigo pilot Terry Bellair headed the OLC list yesterday with a great 602 km flight in his DG 400. We will see and hear more from him.He is one of those “real -kilometer-eaters”.

Good weather also in Israel where friends Arnon [ASW24]and Raffi [PIK20 E]  flew over 300km cross country tasks!
Kingaroy has, as you know already , the first official comps from the season in the southern hemisphere and after 3 days of flying the “more-or-less-top-pilots” are indeed in the top!In sports class Bruce Taylor [Ventus 2cx/18.m]who flew in the worlds in Rieti and in Club class Phillip Ritchie in an LS4, with former world-participant Paul Mander in Standard Libelle on 3d place.

Per Oberg {Sweden} has died in the end of September at age 84.He was the IGC delegate for Sweden for many years and even more important the “founder” of the club class . The first official European Club class championships were in Sweden in Orebro in 1979. And as you know we have club class comps on world level now too. I met him once in Sweden, nice fellow, who did A LOT for gliding!

Off to work now with a headache, but never mind! Enjoy the upcoming week, for now you are up to date. If you fly…fly safe!

First competition in the Southern hemisphere!

Alphen aan den Rijn       05-10-2008

As said many times already and again I can see it outside as the left overs from another hurricane are hitting us today, the season HERE is over , but tomorrow the first competition will start on the Southern Hemiphere . The 28th Club-and Sportsclass Nationals will be flown in Kingaroy [Australia] from 06-10/17-10 -2008. If you are interested you can follow it on www.kingaroygliding.com/nationals.html [Thank’s George for the info!]

To continue with Australia, the members of the MBFC have made their decision and gliding -club will  not be affileated anymore with  the motor flying club. This will be effective in the end of January when the insurance stops. The dual seater is for sale.
The ES, the ASW 15 , owned by Dieter Albrecht [Dundee] will be “used” by a syndicate of 4 pilots and they will buy it later.
Atleast glider pilots have been able to fly a bit after the demise of Sportavia, which was nice. The MBFC will continue as power -flying-club organizing fly-inn’s to several places around Tocumwal, as Temora and Horsham.

I HAD my interview with Michael Sommer and it will be equal  in time in Gliding International and on soaring.eu.
THANK YOU MICHAEL!!!!!
So have a bit of patience as it is worth while reading. I liked Michael’s answers so much , that I forgot to look after my granddaughter Indya , who used her time to “paint” with my brown lipstick my white bath maths and her face, she forgot about her lips!

Perhaps more news later as my grand children arrive in a minute and later I go with them and their mum to the Theatre in town.

See you later.

Global warming!

Alphen aan den Rijn       September 28 2008

It seems that global warming hits Europe harder then the rest of the world. It is not that you say:”” I really feel it”, but since 1850 Europe got 1 dgr. warmer , while the rest “only” had 0.8 dgr.

Today might be a -global-extra-warmer-day, but we loved it here in Holland. Great weather again with nearly 20 dgr. bleu skies but also nice clouds for the pilots and lovely sunny and warm conditions.

Niole and Richard visited last wednesday and we had a short but very pleasant couple of hours. Richard had visited Lasham, where he caught up with Tim and Laurel from Melbourne , all Sportavia -friends and later he flew 2 weeks in Saint Auban. The weather was not as good over there as last year; he flew 2o hours less then in the same period last year. Yesterday they flew back to Sydney and they will spend Christmas , soaring in Tocumwal.

I wrote the first 500 words for the Magazine ” Gliding International ” and have to the deliver the “news” before Oktober 16. Hope to reach Michael Sommer , to talk with him about his second world title in open class. An interesting topic for the next issue.

In the beginning from September, to be precisely september 6 2008 an Austrian pilot ,Werner Amann , flew 1423 km , more or less a jo- jo in a South-Foehn- wind, with no thermal activities. Just “hang”. On www.schempp.hirth.de is a nice article with him written by Bernd Weber,a nice fellow who visited us several times in Tocumwal. It is in German, so for all of you who read German, worthwhile to surf  to.

The USA still has great weather and the best flights last week, were flown over there. In Warner Springs several pilots flew up to over 700 km.I like the 712 km in an LS 6 and the 646 in a Kestrel 17 m. All pilots used the same mountain chains and must have had a lot of pleasure out of their flights.

This month several 2008 FAI Qualifying Sailplane Grand Prix have been flown.Saint Auban in France had a 15 m one, Lasham in the UK as well. Nitra in Slovak Rep. for 18 m. and in November also for 18 m. there is one in Narromine [Australia] . In 2009 we will see the qualifying sailplane GP in Santiago[ Chile] 15m. , in Zar [Poland]club class and in Feldkirchen [Austria] 15 m.

In Australia the season slowly starts. I hear they have had already very good soaring conditions. Friends as Gerrit Kurstjens and Terry Bellair for  sure will make many kilometers in the upcoming season. W’ll keep an eye on them. And…will Coober Pedy have its own gliding club?????And…will the Dutch airline-pilot-couple [ collegues of my daughter] succeed in having their own gliding club in Narromine? We ‘ll find out!

You are up to date again with several soaring-news-issues. Next week we will meet again.Have a great week!

Very nice and soarable autumn weather !

Alphen aan den Rijn            22-09-2008

Normally this time of the year ,I am packing my”gear” to travel to OZ. It still feels weird that I stay in Holland and have to face the cold winter period. I get used to Holland again, but I would lie if I would say I do not mind staying here. Would love to go back to OZ for my annual 6 months! But…decisions have been made and ….my grandchildren are more then adorable!

So if I read the Corowa news I feel a bit jealous that so many ,also lots of ” our ” guests/friends move overseas for their soaring holiday in Australia. Only compliments for Francesco and his team for the every year better and easier going packing of the containers. They have finished it, I heard in a tight schedule, everybody from Spain to Denmark and in between and from Slovak Republic, perfectly in time to help.

Also Africa will be busy with soaring friends “hating” the cold. Specially my English and German friends move there, but also others. Some of them the REALLY lucky ones “do” first Africa and then move to OZ, to enjoy the weather and the soaring in both parts of the world.

I have been asked to write one page in the ” Gliding International” from New -Zealand -soaring-icon John Roake and though I am more then busy with the gallery and baby-sitting, I have said yes. I like the set up of his magazine with the human factors as much important as the news about gliders and competitions.

November has already the Australian Nationals in Narromine! In between pilots still enjoy some soaring in Europe. The weather here has been really nice , a bit cold so 16,17 dgr. but DRY and blue skies with lot’s of sunshine and thermal activities!
Jean Luc Colson flew in Belgium from the airfield of St. Hubert a nice autumn flight from 457 km in his ASW 27 over the hilly areas from the Ardennen. Also nice to see was the 403 km flight from Rafi Luske in Israel in a PIK 20 E. He is a real nice fellow!
In Holland young Tim Kuijpers flew a 314 km.flight.More pilots in both Belgium and Holland had a great soaring day yesterday. Glad to see that Roland Wurbs von Bulow still is flying. Years ago he learned how to fly gliders with us at the Sportavia Soaring Center in Tocumwal. Now he flies an ASW 27 in France [303 km.] most probably on a club -camp over there.

So nobody is complaining about the weather here in Europe over the last week! Pilots indeed deserved a nice-after-summer-period to remember this season, which was not the very best.
This week I catch up with 2 Aussie friends so ,to not get to much carried away with the past and being to nostalgic  , I better say bye and see you next week.

Hurricane Hana

Alphen aan den Rijn      14 -09-2008

In Holland “they” keep statistics about traffic jams!!!!The longest ever was on november 25 2005 with a length of 810 km, due to unexpected heavy snowfall.
The next bad one was in 2006 on 16-11 with 595 km and this week “we ” had 530 km. on 12-09-2008 due to heavy rainfall [ for that reason accidents in the evening-rush, ]40 mm. on a lot of places. Thanks to hurricane Hana who “pleased’ us [not] with her left-overs.
Meaning, the weather has n’t been too good here.

But….while writing I can see blue skies, lot’s of sun , but a lower temperature then normal for this time of the year between 14 and 16/17 dgr. ;18 would be normal. And…a weak easterly wind, which I can see very well due to the fact that 4 high wind- mills are about 1 km. from my house in the ” polder ” .Their huge wings [3] look like the new duo-discus -wings.

The Corowa -team is packing their gliders which will be brought from all over Europe to Grubbenvorst , near Venlo , here in Holland, as the 24 gliders have to be ready for transport on the 16th of September. Just saw that Grietje one of the owners got a new baby girl. Congratulations to both Grietje and Francesco and Frank, who surely will be proud of his new sister.
2 ASG 29 ‘ s will fly on line at Corowa airport, not bad!

As said before, on the same ship as the containers with the gliders, will be also containers for more then half-a-ship, from Andre Rieu, who is going to perform in Australia. What an organization that must be!!!!Glad I do not have to do that, only containers for gliders even one is already a hell-of-a -job.

Nice to see that good old friend Hannu Korhonen [Finland] was enjoying himself last week in Fuentemilanos and he flew a nice 410 km.flight.
Yesterday was an American day again , with the best flights flown in the Truckee-Tahoe area. Good mountain flying there!
Not a lot of activities here or in Belgium last week.Up to 400 km flights in Germany.

Yes the season is about to move to Africa and Australia. Looking forward to keep an eye for you on what’s going on there the next 6 months. I think we better forget about the 2008 season in Europe except for a few very good days, it was not the best season. Were we lucky in Rieti during the WGC!!!!11 days out of 12 with good soaring! By the way the new Gliding International issue for September is out, a magazine from John and Chris Roake from New Zealand, with a long article about the WGC and the post frontal system. Also an article about the accident from Roland Stuck . www.glidinginternational.com

Maria has left again for Munich and we had a great time. Next soaring friends arrive in the end of September;Nicole and Richard from Sydney Australia. Richard is now flying in Saint Auban.

Off to the southern part of Holland now. After working [too] hard in the gallery over the last month I need a short break and visit one of the most beautiful dahlia-parades [the biggest one in Europe after Zundert!] in Valkenswaard, where I lived for 20 years, when I was young!!!!!

Enjoy your next week to the fullest and see you next sunday.

Activities move to other parts of the world! Rain enough in Europe!

Alphen aan den Rijn    september 7 2008.

Have a vernissage in less then ONE hour, so busy , busy!!! Will try to write more, somewhere this week.

Have a nice guest again. From Germany,  Maria Bottcher, yes from Dieter Bottcher former syndicate partner in UE, {a DG 600}. Next week I will catch up with Nicole and Richard Shemtob , from Sidney here in Holland!Richard is in the UE syndicate now, together with 5 other pilots. The glider is still in Tocumwal!

Some news from Africa from good friend Dick. If you look outside and see the autumn weather with wind, rain and falling laves and yo want to fly a nice long cross country flight you can both go to Africa r Australia.

Here is some news from Africa; Enjoy!

Dear Gliding Friend,

Spring is in the air here in South Africa, the trees are getting their new leaves, the temperatures are beginning to warm up and the planning for our next season at Bloemfontein is at an advanced stage.

We have taken the liberty of attaching our News Letter to give you a heads up on our plans for the season. If you don’t want to receive our occasional News Letters please let us know and we will take your name off our mailing list.

Some late news that may be of interest:-

We still have two slots available in our second container. So, if you own a glider that is has already spent most of the summer in it’s trailer, ask yourself, is it fair to condemn it to languish there for another cold, dark and damp six months, when it could spend a happy four months flying in the sun in South Africa. The total return cost is about ₤2100  and if you can get three or four of your mates to share the cost it’s an absolute bargain and tremendous fun. Just for your information, last season we only lost 12 days flying during the whole season, and that’s about typical for a summer in Bloemfontein.

The last week of November and first week of December are nearly fully booked but we do have gliders available for most of the other weeks in the season, and don’t forget that if you make a booking during the first two weeks of our season – 2nd  to 15th November you qualify for a 25% DISCOUNT ON OUR PUBLISHED GLIDER HIRE FEES.

 Best wishes,

Dick and Iain.

Look for more news on their Soaring -safari-site!

Take care , all the best and don’t get to “sad” about the summer disappearing in to autumn and winter. Before you know spring and summer 2009 are back

Cheers Ritz

Happy Autumn!

Alphen aan den Rijn         September 1 2008

Today the metereological autumn has started and we can see and feel it here. Yesterday for sure was summer with on some places in Holland up to 29 dgr. C. Today is different with 8/8 of clouds dark ones with rain and lots of wind ,yes….indeed leaves are falling already from the trees. So this last weekend was the last summerweekend and for all who did not have to work, a great one.
Downunder spring has started and I know how beautiful that time of the year is in OZ.

I was unlucky enough to work both days from this great summer weekend and very hard. A huge truck arrived with 160 objects, from small and light to big and heavy. We had 2 young boys to help and the 2 elderly gentlemen who brought all art from Roland Roure from France. Next weekend will be the opening , so more work to do! That was also the reason I could only write today!

It was pretty sad to see and read over the last weeks that 2 airplanes crashed ,one at the airfield of Madrid in Spain  with 156 people dying and one in Russia with nearely 100 people dead. Also 2 airplanes were overpowered , one in Sudan and one here in Rotterdam, the company of Transavia. Both ended well.
The Transavia one was weird!!!
A couple, HE from Turkey, SHE from Marokko, living together for 8 years went on a holiday together to Turkey. SHE did not want to go as she had a “lover”, for a longer time. HE did not know!
When everything failed to keep her here , and they tried a lot…SHE and her lover decided to take drastic measures. The lover called 112 the emergency number and the plane was held for 5 hours. HE from Turkey had nothing to do with it, SHE and the lover are still in custody! The worst scenario for them could be 4 years in prison!

Better looking at what happened in our soaring world.
Rieti had good weather again , with in the weekend 2 over 800 km . flights.
Rayskala had some great flights yesterday and they deserve it as they had till now not the very best summer, I heard. In Holland the weather was real ” summer-weather ” but more for the beach then for soaring, nothing special happened. It will be nearly over now and also Holland has not had the very best soaring conditions this year.

Today the 15 m. Nationals start in Saint Auban -France and at Lasham – UK. At Lasham 15 UK toppilots have been invited and 5 international pilots based on IGC ranking.Hope the weather will be better then here today and the rest of the days!

Thayt’s it for now, enjoy your week and see you hopefully next sunday or a day or 2 later! Sorry!
It will be  a nice week for me, after the opening ,my granddaughter has her birthday [5] on thursday and Maria , a friend from Munich arrives on that day too.The die -hard -visitors from Sportavia still will know her, as they have seen her and her husband Dieter , many years for soaring in Tocumwal.

Back to normal!

Alphen aan den Rijn       24-08-2008

Life is nearly back to normal! After the WGC in Rieti which I attended, the reading of all the news of the WGC in Luesse and now the Olympic Games, with ONE more evening of evaluations here on TV and ……..life goes back to normal again!
Loved the Olympic Games. Great results and great sportsmen and women.Great show from China!! Hope they have learned to be kind to ALL people now, not only to their guests.
Even the Dutch teams did a great job, with very unexpected gold medals as the ladies water polo girls and expected ones as Anky van Grunsven with the horse-training and the hockey babes!Being number 12 on the list  of 204 countries is for a small country as Holland very successful.

Slowly gliders are prepared for the trip overseas, up to Africa or Australia. Heard that the gliders for Corowa go on the same ship as all the gear Andre Rieu takes with him to his performance in Melbourne. Some of my OZ friends have already tickets. He seems to be some kind of hero there.
Weather in OZ is already very pleasant and the season continues through winter in Queensland with Jondaryan as one of the places to be. Not great weather but still flyable. Now the weather improves and they flew today already over 500 k from Jondaryan airport.

Europe has pretty miserable weather though Germany still has flights from over 500 k too, one even flown in an LS 4. Great ffort.

The Minden-Truckee area in the USA is still good for over 900 km and from Rayskala in Finland they even still flew over 600 km. Heard that the weather this summer there, has n’t been too good either.
The Belgium competition at Keiheuvel was won by young Bert Schmelzer who had practise enough in Rieti.Good runner up was Eddie Huybreckx, a long -time-good-pilot!Last week Rieti  fell with the nose in the good weather-butter again with over 700 km flights.

Here in Holland the weather is pretty miserable , but….next week seems to be OK.
You remember Dieter Dundee ??? He flew with us at Sportavia for many years and still lives half a year there. He stays with me for a few days and  while visiting towns[–sight-seeing–] in Holland , we needed always the umbrella! That will be surely different when he will be back in OZ in October.Still very dry over there.
Heard that the Murray Border Flying Club in Tocumwal, will go back to being a -motorclub -only again. Gliding will move to Sportaviation and it seems the new CP over there is nearly finished.
It was nice from the MBFC to host gliding since the closing-down of Sportavia. Atleast some pilots still enjoyed gliding in Tocumwal.

Corowa has fantastic gliders on line next season, something to be proud of.I met Josef Snirc in Rieti and he is going to fly in Corowa and even brings one of “his” Dynamics to OZ. That “little” tow plane [ an ultra light] is very fast and with nearly no noise. Great toy!

Back to the last items of the Olympics on TV now and then I am  back in the normal routine. Evenings start already earlier, yes we slowly move to autumn here and sometimes you can smell and feel it already.Wish I could see OZ for a few weeks, but…perhaps in 2 years!

See you next week.Ritz

30th FAI WGC is over!

Alphen aan den Rijn         17-08-2008

The first split WGC is over now. Both results count for the TEAM CUP ,but at this stage I have not found out who won it. Only thing I read was that Wolfgang Janowitsch, apologized to his Austrian team mates from Rieti, that they got their result a bit more down in Luesse. But for sur the Germans will have won as they had great results in both Rieti and Luesse. So have the French!

Most pleased I was with the winner in 15 m class. Finally he made it; Gyorgy Gulyas! How close was he in Eskilstuna! Loosing only in the last minutes and I saw his face when he saw that the gold slipped from his fingers. I nearly had tears!!!
This time he built up a comfortable “zone” during the race, to avoid what happened last year. A truly well deserved gold was for him this year. Congratulations Giorgy!!!
Runner up was Janus Centka, the old fox , as I dare call him friendly. Such an experienced pilot and this was not the first time , that he did remarkably well in the end. He loves the “Diane” he flies and is just “ONE WITH IT’!
A bit of an unexpected 3d place, but very much deserved is for young pilot Mark Leeuwenburgh from Holland. This was his very first WGC and for sure we will hear more from him. On the last day he passed Leigh Wells the WGC champion from Eskilstuna, who clearly had more trouble with the cirrus on the last day then Mark.

In 18 m. class the French pilot Oliver Darroze, was the best. Team flying by both French pilots helped during the last week, to pass Ronald Termaat who was first most first week. Both pilots very much appreciated each others great flying and in the end Oliver was the best. Ronald is a great runner up who tried everything to get the first place back, even doing a re-start on the last day”  to get rid of “the FRENCH.
Karol Stariszak from Poland was number 3 in this class. To be honest , I never heard from him.But great effort!

In open class my favourite pilot Michael Sommer won. I know Michael quite well as he flew many times in the past with us in Tocumwal. One day, I even dared shouting at him , when he arrived just in front of a severe storm. We had closed all the hangar-doors already but of course had to open them again when Michael just made it back before. And when you know how big and how heavy those doors are….but we were waiting with a few to open and close them quickly. While getting all the water from our nimbus I gave him”heaps” as he with a big smile on his face apolgized for “the inconvenience” , went on with his job, while telling what a great flight he had. Of course I melted!!!!
As you know I predicted his win and even the second place from Tassilo, as both fly together in a superb way.I was wrong with the 3d place as good friend Lourens Goudriaan won here instead of Pete Harvey. Both are great pilots and Lourens over the whole period was the better one, being first during most of the first week. Great effort!
I hope that Michael once will be the next Ingo Renner with 4 or perhaps even more ,WGC titles.
The other Michael, this time in swimming and called Phelps,  did it. He passed yesterday Mark Spitz who had 7 medals in one Olympic game and today he wrote history by having the 8th gold!!!!Great stuff!!!!

Congratulations to all pilots!!! Also to those who did not win, for a nice and interesting WGC. I tried to follow it via different blogs and of course the official one. To be honest, the blog from the German team was better, more actual and earlier with the news. I love Pete Harvey’s blogs, but he only wrote twice! The American blog was in my favourites too, great job their TC did.

I am not going to speculate on which comps were the best or the nicest or….. For sure we had in Italy the better weather with 11 days out of 12, as day 13 was a compulsory rest day, but both Directors Leo and Herbert with their deputees , did a great job in organizing their WGC teams well. Both countries deserve ALL compliments for their great efforts.
Off now to Hungary and Slovak Rep. for the 2010 WGC.
The 31th WGC for world, club and standard class will be from 03-07-2010 /18-07-2010 in Prievidza{Slovak Rep.} .Josef will be the director. Josef was steward now this year in Rieti.
The 31th WGC for 15 m. ,18 and open class will be in Szeded {Hungary} from 17-07-2010/01-08-2010.

First of course next years WORLD AIR GAMES in Turino{Italy} from 07-06-2009/13-06-09.

The weather here is not so good though we expect a nice temperature between 22 and 25 dgr. But forecasted thunderstorms , hail and gusty winds will stop great flying . The comps in Belgium at Keiheuvel , a weekend competition, will most probably suffer from these circumstances, but…you never know. They might find a nice “window”, as they found many in Luesse. I was supposed to go there but just could not find  ” a lift” for the last 30 km. Will go south anyhow for a concert tonight from the group Rowwen Heze. Love their music.

Looking at the OLC I see that the Truckee-Minden_Tahoe area had great flights  last week, so perfect weather. I once landed on the Lake Tahoe with an Albatross amphibian. I was there for the pre worlds in Minden Nevada, when we got to know the owner of this vintage “bird”. He invited us and some members from my Dutch team and from the Ozzie team for “a ride” over the mountains, to land on the lake. Thrilling that was, a once -in your -life -time- thrill!!!! In the end George, my ex,  bought that Albatross and now it is still in Tocumwal, hopefully in the hangar!

Yes gliding gives you many, many special moments in life! That’s it for now. Preparing for the train to travel south for 2 hours. I still hate driving on highways since I lived in Tocumwal for 11 years , a town with 1475 inhabitants and nearly no traffic. It’s to crowdy on the roads here and in my opinion the drivers here at NOT friendly.

Enjoy next week see you again on sunday!Ritz

One more week to go for WGC pilots in Luesse!

Alphen aan den Rijn        10-07-2008

First things first! I was supposed to travel today to Luesse to inform you straight from the comps for 3 days, but…..things did not work out, also due to my own “not-being-organized-well-enough”.Next time I will organize my trip again on my own therms.

So from far I try to evaluate a  bit what’s happening in Luesse. For sure you read all news by your self so I will forget about that.
Interesting p.e is that the Dutch pilots are flying so well!Normally it is The Germans, the French and the English ….This time the Clockies get a lot of compliments and I do not say the French and the German’s and the English are NOT doing well. They do and I still firmly believe that Michael Sommer will win open class, though I was a bit amazed to see that his first day was not the very best!
Why is Holland just good with all pilots!?

NOT that Holland was NOT good in the past. Baer Selen was world champion in Chatouraux. Kees Musters, who tragically died in France in a hang glider accident in 1987, was world champion in Hobbs [USA].
When I was TC of the Dutch Team I” had “Baer Selen as World champion in Uvalde[Texas]. Silver medal winners I “had” with Erik Borgmann in Borlange[Sweden] and Steven Raimond in Bayreuth [Germany] . Ronald Termaat was”my”  bronze winner in Rieti in the European comps. And …Steven Raimond was European champion in Rayskala [Finland] . I celebrated too as steward that year. And Ronald of course was European champion in France, so Holland always had good pilots. But now , this year, we belong to the countries as Germany, GB and France. Why?
First of all, the Dutch team has been guided over the last couple of years by the TC Fouwke and by coach Baer Selen jr. Of course he is a 2 times world champion and his input is of great value. Same companions for many years now, so no invention of the 5th wheel!!!
Did the German team p.e have a doctor, a met -man ,a coach and lot’s of people “en -route” and on the TP’s, in the past, and lot’s of sponsoring, we had to do with our pilots the TC and very small budget.
Nowadays the Dutch team has a sponsor in NSF/NOC, a firm friendship as they see each other regularly, which is ALSO of great value, a coach and an experienced TC, and when on the ground everything is smooth, the team members are friends , the situation is there to “create” a world champion or just below.Of course the “luck-factor” is important too, but when you are good this is automatically to your advantage.
On top of that the Dutch junior team is excellent, also more to expect for the future!
So…that’s my word for the sunday and….my private opinion!

The weather in Luesse is less good as in Rieti, but I guess that’s what everybody expected anyhow. Today they do not fly, 8/8 of Cu but just high enough to not interfere with the airshow which will be today.Perhaps a  good idea as they wanted to integrate the airshow IN the comps. I heard some TC’s were already a bit annoyed yesterday as Junckers doing passengers flights, started between the gliders!!!!!!
About 25 pilots , including the German Team, have promised to show the many spectators today, what gliding is all about! They will rig the glider , start…fly around a bit and for sure come back with a REAL finish!!!!No penalty points today!!!They will have LOTS of fun!

A pity gliding is not an official Olympic sport. I really love to see all sports so I am totally NOT bored these coming weeks. Gliding would fit in nicely, but with the smog in China this might be not a good idea!

One more week to go for the WGC and very small differences in the top-places. A lot can happen, so nothing is clear at this stage! I really hope that Georgy Gulyas will win, I still see his face change from happiness to sadness on that last day and during the last minutes in Sweden and I had tears in my eyes!!

Good luck to ALL pilots, may the 3 best in each class WIN!!!!
